The Room Downtown: Your Premiere Photo & Video Studio in DTLA

Founded in 2017, The Room Downtown was born from a simple yet powerful realization: there was a lack of affordable and accessible creative spaces for photographers, filmmakers, and other artists in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. We set out to change that by creating a studio that is both inspiring and accessible to all.

Experience the Difference:

  • A Piece of LA History:

    • The Room Downtown resides within a historic landmark – the Financial Center Building, constructed in 1924. This Beaux Arts masterpiece, located in the heart of DTLA, adds a unique character to your creative endeavors.

A Thriving Creative Community:

Today, 704 S Spring Street is a vibrant hub for designers, artists, and commercial fashion businesses. The surrounding area pulsates with creative energy, boasting art galleries, tech firms, trendy restaurants, and historic buildings, providing a dynamic and inspiring environment for your creative pursuits.

History:

Built in 1924, the Financial Center Building is located in the heart of the then financial district, this building was originally designed to house financial offices. In classic Beaux Arts tradition, contrasting stories of terra cotta and pressed brick define the base, shaft, and attic of this office building. Delicate metal detailing still graces the façade. The building is in The National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1924 by Norton and Wallis, a Jewish architectural firm, the building also housed Samuel T Norton’s office for many years, and served as a center of the then Financial District.  The firm was responsible for a large amount of notable Jewish buildings around Los Angeles that survive to this day, as well as the famous Upton Sinclair House (a National History Landmark) and the Los Angeles Theatre.  Samuel Norton’s mother, Bertha (Greenbaum) Norton, was said to be the first Jewish child born in the city, and her mother before her, Mrs. E. Greenbaum, was the first Jewish woman to come to Los Angeles.

Today:

Today 704 S Spring Street is home to designers, artists, and commercial fashion manufacturing.  The bottom floors are comprised by an organic juice shop, boutique clothing shop, art store, etc., replacing more rundown businesses previously there, with a focus from management on gentrification and cleaning up the building/space.  There is 24/hour security on site and a dozen security cameras throughout (elevators, front entrance, etc.) monitored and recorded by management.  The area is home to many old buildings of historic nature, populated by tech firms, art galleries, restaurants, and financial institutions.
